"View my Commitment

Joycooley001 Mar 22, 2023, 4:55 PM"Mindset - The Graduation Mindset Assessment - At Spartanburg Day School 100% of students graduate and get accepted to college. This is a success and it is impressive. I do think these numbers are becoming harder to maintain as the school is accepting more students from different backgrounds. SDS has guidelines and assessments students must pass to get accepted into the school. As the world is evolving so is the school. As a school community this year we have accepted more students with learning disabilities than years past. I think to accommodate those students and keep up the high graduation numbers, the school will need to higher specialist to support student needs. One main factor of student success is parent involvement. Students who are in poverty, the majority do not have the support at home to help them maintain their college readiness. Study skills, organization, and communication skills, all start in the child's home. If the foundational skills are not met at home, it is the teachers responsibility to also teach students these skills to help them be successful in academic areas. To help students in this area, I strongly believe that an organized classroom with solid practices and procedures will help students improve academically. Students who are not usually organized learn the flow and expectation of the classroom and then are able to focus more on the task at hand, than trying to find their pencil and notebook. Having schedules posted, expectations repeated, and everyday transitions, helps students concentrate. I do believe that high poverty schools can achieve high graduation rates. It all depends on the leadership, the person who is in an administrator role determines the work ethic of their teachers. Administrators whom teachers respect, with high school morale, teachers have more of a drive to help students succeed, instead of feeling hopeless. Teachers with administrative support feel they can help their students be college and career ready. Teachers that are committed to cutting out the ‘extra noise’ and focusing on student need and differentiation can help each student succeed with their own learning style. Arts education and physical education heavily influence student achievement. The arts allow students to work on their auditory, visual, and tactile skills. The arts keep them engaged, and also gives them an outlet to show expression. The arts help students grow their short-term and long-term memory. Physical education helps students heighten their dopamine levels which increases their effort, optimism, and working memory. If you connect the arts and physical education back to the engagement mindset, this shows that physical and art education helps students have a high level of engagement, which in turn allows them to have a high level of achievement because they are motivated to succeed. I feel that all students should be at least work force ready. Not all students will want to go to college, and some will already have the foundation of a work position before they even graduate. The importance of being ready for the ‘world’ is more important than just being college ready. My husband, for example, barely graduated high school, for lack of attendance, he never studied, but almost made a perfect score on the ACT. He could have easily gone to any college he wanted to. But it was not the path he wanted to take, he went into the workforce with no degree and now makes 6 times the amount of money I do, and I have a degree. Daily Reflection - Take Away 1: My students have middle school mentors. I can use these mentors as examples for success, and show my students how they will one day be in their ‘shoes’ ready for high school and one day college or the work-force. Take Away 2: Implementing running in place as a quick ‘brain booster’ is a great way to get my students dopamine levels to rise and get them engaged. Take Away 3: Giving students more worldly experiences will help them be prepared for college or the workforce. Implement - In the future I would like to evaluate my grade level curriculum and find ways to implement culture, arts, physical movement, and partnerships with other grade levels into our lesson plans. Overall each mindset revolves around how we can empower our students. Having their bodies, minds, and personal culture implemented into the curriculum is a perfect way to bring real life experiences into the classroom. I would bring in speakers, and people that spark their interest. For example, we have a student who wants to be a veterinarian. I can bring in a friend of mine that is a veterinarian to the school to speak to students about their career. These real world examples give students a sense of purpose and help explain the why. Why do I have to do this, is often the most asked question during a lesson. Having the arts and physical education be integrated into these lessons as well, will keep their brains ‘sparked’ and ready to absorb the information during lessons. "View my Commitment

View my Commitment

kmduncan002 Mar 20, 2023, 6:26 PM"Stikk Post 5 Engagement Mindset Self-Assessment I think that all teachers struggle with student engagement at times. One of the major factors in getting student engagement is ensuring that students feel that their classroom is a safe space. We know that not all of our students have a safe space outside of our classroom so ensuring that they feel secure in our walls is the first hurdle. Students are hungry, tired, and scared sometimes when they enter our classrooms. We as teachers sometimes are the enemy that is stopping them from doing what they want to do which is eat, sleep, and just not be here. We need to make the classroom a fun, engaging, and always safe space for them to be who they are and share their ideas. Sometimes we need to be prepared for the fact that they have life needs that are going to take precedence. Like, it is hard to think when you are hungry. So, I let them eat. I also keep snacks for the students. I know that some of them don’t have easy access to food. I also know that my friends always wanted to hang out at my house because my mom did not hide food or say no. Snacks and drinks were there for whoever wanted them. People felt safe and taken care of in my mom’s kitchen. I want them to have that feeling in my classroom. So, I used to bake for my students and share recipes. We would incorporate food into the lesson because full bellies mean one less distraction. We also need to make sure that what we are teaching them is relevant to them. We need to make sure that what we are teaching is something they can use in life outside of the English classroom. Insight Learning for compliance is learning because it is required. I must do this to get to the next class or grade or to get out of here. I do not want this to be my student's memory of English class. I do not want this to be a student's thoughts of education. Well, this is just what I must do to get to the next goal. I want them to enjoy learning to get something important out of it. I like that the book has us thinking in terms of what activities can we do to help alleviate stress and make education fun for students. I like that the book pushes us to move away from lectures and towards hands on activities that get students out of the desk. I wish that we could move towards getting students out of the classroom and onto the playground and sports pitches more. I think that would help tremendously. I think we need a move away from seat time and toward athletics and the arts to really help students feel that they can express themselves and that we understand them and their needs. Implement I would like to implement ownership strategies in the classroom. I like the idea of implementing ownership of the classroom and ownership of the work. This really leads to students taking the lead in the classroom. Making choices about reading, the type of work that they do, this can all help with students buying into and seeing the value in the classroom. I also think that starting class with a problem for the students to solve is a fun activity. I can imagine my students really being engaged with this for some of the novels we read such as The Great Gatsby. We could begin the class with a murder investigation and have them try to figure it out. I already do a weekly and daily reflection. I usually jot down notes at the end of the day, week, and unit. Things that worked strategies that I think would be better next time etc. I also go over things I did not do well or things that completely failed and I need to try again. I find this hard sometimes, but I think it is part of being a teacher (human) is that we do fail. This takes me back a few chapters and to admitting we failed and need to try again. I have done that with students, and I think that chapter is on to something. I think with those classes that I say nope this did not work; I am sorry let's try this instead are the classes I have connected with the b"View my Commitment

kmduncan002 Mar 20, 2023, 6:25 PM"Stikk Post 4 Rich Classroom Climate Mindset Self-Assessment I think that I am safety minded when I have a classroom. I make sure that my students have a physically safe environment that meets all the requirements. We spend time learning about emergency procedures and we have also discussed how we feel about emergency procedures. The book discusses how students need to feel safe and comfortable in the class in order to take risks. I agree that this is important. We need to make a safe, clean, and organized environment. I would add that students find security in routine. Students like it when they know how their day is going to go and understand things like how the class is structured. Having a daily, weekly, monthly, and semester plan is a good way to help students feel comfortable and cut down on the anxiety of not knowing what will happen in class each day. Students like to know the rules and that everyday those rules will be handled fairly. Insight- I found this chapter optimistic. I agree that our mindset as the teacher sets the mood of the classroom just like the mindset of administration sets the mood for the faculty. We need to be the one that constantly puts on the positive face for the students in order to create those safe spaces to learn and grow that they need. It can be difficult at times to do this. I always try to be positive, but we are all only human and can have bad days. I feel horrible on the days that I know my own attitude has shaped the day to the negative. I have always tried to be honest with myself about this and apologized afterwards. If I have mishandled something or not met my own high level of expectations, I try to make sure that I acknowledge that to the class so that they can see me trying to be better. I think that although the book has these high expectations that we are always on point, it is okay for students to see that we can struggle as well and make mistakes or don’t meet our own expectations. Implement- I would like to look at my classroom rules and make them more streamlined and positive like the ones in the book. I like the cool rules setup that the book recommends that only has 4 positive rules. I really like that the rules could elicit a discussion of what each means and how we can meet the requirements daily. I also like that this covers many things in a positive way. I also found the recommendations in Be Nice to be something that I need to work on. I need to make sure that I am positively affirming the children's contribution to the class and helping to set a kind example for the students. I also like the idea of creating a sense of ownership by saying the word we and making the classroom accessible to students. Students need to feel that this is their space, and they are not just visitors in my space. I try to keep 90% of my classroom for the students. They have their supplies that they have access to and bookshelves, storage areas and multiple sitting areas to choose from. I like for them to feel that they can move freely through the room. If they need a pencil or book they should know where they are and be able to get up and get what they need without interrupting the flow of the class. I am particular about my desk being off limits though. That is my space within the classroom where I keep my personal belongings. That is where I keep my personal belongings like my keys, phone, purse, and laptop. I think for safety reasons this is something that is necessary, and it is important for there to be boundaries within the classroom. "View my Commitment

Joycooley001 Mar 20, 2023, 4:53 PM"Mindset - The Engagement Mindset Assessment - First impressions are everything. At least that is what we are told when we are growing up. During a first meeting with a student, as a teacher I am analyzing their language, how they speak to their parents, how they are walking, what they are wearing, if they can sit still, follow directions, and many more. All of these things I take into consideration and I make a decision in my head, based on those items, if I think the student is going to be successful or if they are going to have a difficult time. As a teacher sometimes those thoughts are pre-placed by past teachers comments when they find out you have a past student of theirs. I have come to the realization that my opinion on the student and parent is usually very different from their past teachers. Many students have proved my predictions wrong about their abilities, when they are participating in class. As a teacher I do think it is expected for us to quickly analyze a student, and give immediate feedback. I also think great teachers' perspectives on student achievement should be that all students can achieve something great, but it is how we as teachers help them find that goal. I am ashamed to point out that my internal thoughts sometimes come across externally. Students can tell through my questioning, body language, and facial expressions that I am disappointed or confused by their responses. For my students in poverty, my behavior impacts their confidence and it also affects the relationship between teachers and students. It is crucial for teachers to stay neutral and excited for all students to join their class. Once a student is evaluated or the teacher has evidence of abilities, should the teacher then approach the parent and student to seek enhanced support. All students are different, and learn differently. Based on student experiences they will each approach their learning differently. Emotionally students in poverty go through high anxiety, these emotions may cause them to not approach their assignment with gusto, they have more pressing things to think about, like what will be for dinner. Experiences heavily influence how students approach their learning. If students have many positive experiences, in particular with education, they will more likely thrive. I frequently have to remind myself how old my students are, and how their home life may impact their learning. I work very hard to ensure I am asking purposeful questions during lessons, always circulating back to the why. Giving students the opportunity to approach assignments differently that align with their learning styles, and giving them choice, helps students think critically and be excited about their learning. When I teach, I always present multiple strategies on how to study, or approach a math problem for example. Students then get to choose what strategy works best for them to get the correct answer. I also present students with multiple strategies on how to control their emotions. If students are not emotionally ready for the school day, the day will be wasted. Daily Reflection - Take Away 1: High levels of engagement helps students manage their stress, allows the school day to run smoothly, and keeps students on their toes for the next task. Take Away 2: I have used many of the arousal strategies to maintain alertness, without knowing they were heightening my students' engagement through movement. I will be trying the ownership strategy next, I love how it is a small, but impactful way students can own their learning. Take Away 3: “If you don’t play the game you will never lose” I see this consistently through education, where students do not even try because they are afraid to fail. They give up instantly, because they are not interested in the subject and have learned through chronic stress, helplessness. Implement - Today my co-teacher was absent, and I taught the main lesson for the week. This lesson is what we call “copycat”. Students have to copy my drawings and writing. These lessons are very boring, and I often find students talking out of turn, and constantly fidgeting. Today I tried to implement as much movement as I could when teaching the lesson. When the lesson started, I told the students to put their marker holder caps on the bottom of their tray, and then give me a thumb in the air when the task was completed. Every student participated and was quiet. I told them this was a signal to show me they are ready for the next task. I then asked students to write their name at the top corner of their paper. Once their name was written they had to stand up. Once all the students were standing, I said “once, two three clap!” This signaled my students to clap once. All students then sat down to get started. Throughout the lesson students held up markers, made sure their markers had ‘magic’ and made funny noises “beep, beep, beep, la, la, la,” to see if their marker was ready to draw or write. The level of engagement was so high, it was the first time, no one interrupted a lesson! At the end of the lesson students held up their paper in the air, I collected them, then told students to stand up, put their hands in the air, wave them around like they just don't care, and give themselves a pat on the back. Afterwards they were all excited to sit on the rug for the next activity for the day. This high level of engagement, set up the class for a day long of continual longing of engagement and excellent listening skills. I was shocked to see how well these strategies worked. Most of them I made up on the spot. I have learned that even the smallest implementation of movement/engagement needs to be consistent and it will work to help run your classroom and it gives your students a longing to stay on task. kmduncan002 Mar 15, 2023, 1:35 PM" Positivity Mindset Self-Assessment- I think that all teachers struggle with this especially after being in the classroom for a while. We become overwhelmed with responsibility and paperwork, and other teachers’ negative attitudes. It is hard to keep a positive mindset. When I stopped teaching to stay home with my daughters I realized after a few months that 1. I was not as stressed out and 2 I really needed to be particular about the next place I chose to work. The next job I choose to take would be a place where the teachers, staff, and administration like teaching and students and want to make a difference. So, this chapter really spoke to me about a decision I made years ago. Choosing to be positive and help students to have a positive mindset can make all the difference. Insight Having a positive outlook and teaching from a place that boosts optimism and helps students feel empowered is something that should be important to all teachers. By being positive, especially in difficult situations such as facing failure, we can teach our students to see failure as a steppingstone towards improvement and reaching those goals we set in the last chapter. Implement I love the concept of Nutrient words. We do need to use our words as if they are a supplement to our students' educational and emotional diet. Whether they want to admit it or not our words are powerful with our students and our children. I know that when my daughter receives a compliment from her teacher or a friend it brightens the rest of her day. We are the same way. We anxiously await feedback from administrator observations or teacher feedback in the hopes that we find out something positive. All our students need this, but for some we may say the only positive word they hear about themselves that day. That is a powerful and sad thought. We hear all the time to be the change we want to see in the world. I also like the idea of incorporating the power minute and encouraging the children to be positive to each other. kmduncan002 Mar 15, 2023, 9:33 AM"Stikk Post 2 Achievement Mindset Self- Assessment The achievement mindset is important for teachers and students to adopt. It is a way to make sure that we all are moving forward. One of the hardest things to admit about yourself as a teacher is that you have pigeonholed students for their background or lack of effort as lazy or never going to achieve. But I think that we have all at some point been so burnt out that we have fallen into that hole. Especially if the faculty we belong to normalize that mindset. Insight -I think that as teachers especially for older students we forget that not all students learn to set lofty goals or that the only way to achieve those goals is through determination and hard work. I am reminded of a real eye-opening conversation I had with a student when I was pregnant with my first child. She just had a daughter the semester before and was telling me all the ways that I could get free diapers and formula from local agencies and explaining how I needed to sign up for WIC and food stamps now. She then shared her plan to get pregnant again next year to keep the supplements coming in. I asked her how she was so knowledgeable about all of this, and she said o this is how the women in my family make a living. If I do this right I will never have to work. I asked her if she had goals outside of that and she said she didn’t see the point. I went home and wept. I was so overwhelmed at the thought that she had no life goals. We failed her and I had no idea how to combat a lifetime of her being told to expect nothing more. We have to foster that mindset and teach our students how to set goals and be determined. This is a conversation my husband and I have often since he trains people at work and I am a teacher. He often comes home and says that for his workers a lot of times they have no motivation, self-confidence, or grit. He has told me stories of men and women just giving up in tests and describes them as shutting down, getting angry, or confrontational when faced with a challenging problem when they are being tested. The point of that portion of the test is not to see if they know the answer. They expect them not to know the answer, they want to see them go through the process of troubleshooting the problem. They are truly testing their grit or tenacity. We have discussed how this needs to be combatted in school since a lot of these men and women have never learned how to overcome obstacles but have learned avoidance techniques. This is extremely problematic for life, but in my husband's line of work these inactions could cost the people or others around them their lives. Implement I love the SMART goal chart. I think that this is an amazing tool to use in the classroom with my students and I cannot wait to implement this strategy. This will help students achieve a growth mindset and can encourage the grit work ethic. I also really need to be sure that I am setting challenging and engaging tasks for the students that truly make them work towards the goal at the end of a 9 week or semester. I am thinking about adding a performance element to each 9 weeks such as a play performance at the end of the Shakespeare unit etc. The last time that I taught The Great Gatsby students did all the research and planned an end of unit flapper party. They planned the menu, decorations, outfits, music, and even taught each other dances like the Charleston. "View my Commitment

kmduncan002 Mar 15, 2023, 8:45 AM"A. Relational Mindset B. Self-Assessment- I usually know all of my student's names within the first 30 days. There are usually one or two that I struggle with either pronunciation or just remembering and it always bothers me. I know how important it is to know each student by name because it helps us build a relationship. I use get to know you activities and that really helps. One of the first activities we do in class is usually a get to know me game such as a 4 corners activity that gets us up and learning about each other. I love the idea of the me bag and I think that I will use it next semester. I am good at trying to get to know them, but I often forget to share about myself. C. Insights- 1. I learned that I need to do a better job of letting students become a part of my life (outside of the classroom). I need to share more about what I am doing and what goals I am setting and meeting or maybe not doing so well at. 2. One way I could do that is by sharing goals that I have set. In school I always related to the teachers that would share and tell stories, so I need to be sure that I am doing this in a meaningful and thoughtful way. 3. I learned that students that feel an affinity for teachers tend to do better. I also learned that students that come from stable two parent homes need these relationships less than students that do not. I would tend to argue that they may not need them, but building these relationships helps. D. I would like to implement the strategy that has teachers sharing their own life experiences such as the flat tire story that is shared in the text. I really liked how that story gave students a real-life situation and then asked the students to brainstorm solutions. That is a bit of real life that these students could really do with having prior knowledge of. Then when they have their first flat tire maybe they won't be as scared and will have an action plan. I know my first car related emergency was that my alternator started going bad on the way home from my husband’s house when we were dating. I thought that I was being abducted by aliens to begin with because my only understanding of a car acting like that was from the movie First Encounters of the Third Kind starring Richard Dreyfus. It is hilarious now but also a bit embarrassing because I was so naïve to the inner workings of vehicles. Thank goodness my brother answered the phone when my now husband and parents did not otherwise, I would have sat scared to death in that car crying until morning too scared to get out. Our students need us to share these life experiences and then have them brainstorm solutions. This will help them to be able to think their way out of situations later in life. I may start doing this with my children as well. I would like to hear how they may deal with situations. "View my Commitment

Joycooley001 Mar 14, 2023, 4:53 PM"Mindset - The Rich Classroom Mindset Assessment - In my classroom the culture is how we present ourselves and how we treat others. Respect is key in facilitating our classroom culture. Our climate is a happy, positive, inviting environment. I establish this climate by modeling how we speak to others, and how our moods or actions can affect someone else. The climate can change quickly based on a student or even me as the teacher. Mood heavily influences preparation for learning. To encourage our class culture, my class shares a ‘paper bag me’ show and tell. In the paper bag are a few items that tell the class about their family, their beliefs, and things they like and dislike. This is one small piece that gives us all an insight into someone's life. As the teacher I use these presentations to help me incorporate student culture into my teaching. My main resource to implement student culture is to find relevant books they can make connections to. Students may come up and talk about their own experiences. To allow students to feel comfortable and safe I share my own life stories, sharing my hardships and successes puts me in a vulnerable position, and it helps them be comfortable to share their life experiences, or failures with me and their peers. Coming up with a solution to their classmates' problem is also a great way to cultivate community. My number one rule in my classroom is respect your classmates, your teacher, and yourself. When the class takes this rule to heart, they understand that if they respect themselves, they will not want to treat others badly, steal, cheat, lie, make fun of or hit others. The rule of respect allows students to feel safe emotionally and physically. When the rule is broken, we reflect, and often I pull students aside to talk through their behavior. We discuss what the student should have done differently, express that they are not a bad child, but the action they chose was not okay and that our actions have consequences, good or bad. I then issue the consequence. When I approach behavior in this manner, there is no student backlash, and it shows them that all actions have a reaction. Being able to show real life examples of success in my classroom helps students believe they can succeed too. It also shows a realistic example and can be a visualization of my expectations. This helps students know what questions to ask for clarification and helps them pursue mastery. I encourage my students to ask questions, and even ask the same question more than once! Student clarity is one key success. Daily Reflection - Take away 1: Be an advocate for your students, make your classroom a safe space for them to make mistakes and grow, stick up for them when they need it most. Take away 2: Make your classroom responsive, give students a chance to voice their opinions, feelings, and thoughts. Giving students a voice gives them a feeling of importance and safety. Take away 3: adapt your plans to enhance student culture, and help them set micro goals to help each student move forward. Implement - Circle time plays a huge role in the elementary school setting. This time allows students to speak about their week, their feelings, struggles, and successes. Circle time is typically done in the morning and in the afternoon. In the morning each student is given an opportunity to share something about themselves. If there is a hardship, as a class community we try to help find a solution. If there is something exciting a student shares, we all congratulate them on their success. If a student shares about their goal being met, we praise them and students are able to ask questions on how the goal was achieved and what the next goal will be. In the afternoon, each student is given the opportunity to speak again, this time about their school day. What they thought was hard, important, fun, and they are given the opportunity to present ideas on the following lesson. Student feedback is one way I am given a guide as the teacher to see what they enjoyed in the lessons and how I can continue to facilitate the excitement for the next lesson. I adjust my lessons to cater to their opinions and ideas. This gives the students control of their learning and helps them take ownership of their assignments. When I abide by their feedback or suggestions, it motivates students to complete assignments with excellence. "View my Commitment

Joycooley001 Mar 13, 2023, 5:15 PM"Mindset- The Positivity Mindset Assessment - There are a few times throughout the year I do feel helpless when working with students in poverty. Trying to have a positive attitude and be the constant encourager can be difficult at times especially when the student is never positive, even when the student does exceptional work or great behavior. I have had a handful of students in poverty before that do have a constant negative mindset. It is very difficult to believe in someone when they will not eventually help themselves and be excited about their successes. I have also had students who have broken away from their negativity and have had major success in the classroom. But it all started with me, the teacher, initiating that positive change, and language, giving students positive and purposeful feedback. In my classroom I do my best to initiate positive teaching through the first greeting in the morning. I smile, give a happy greeting, ask each student one thing about their weekend or previous night. I have noticed this small action helps set up students for succees, because it shows them I care and are excited they are here. I am a big advocate for positive feedback, not treats, or prizes, but genuine encouraging feedback for students. A simple “you are smart, you can do this!” goes a long way, some need solid evidence they are progressing, “I love how you used a complete sentence when you said…” and sharing that progress infront of the class encourages the student to believe in themselves and become more self-reliant. Throughout the year my students also set goals for themselves, these goals can be academic or more personal, for example: learning how to crochet. We discuss how our goals need to be realistic an obtainable. Having goals that you know you can meet encourages students to work hard toward accomplishing their goals. The main technique I use in my classroom to help students and myself be more positive is present this quote: “I give you permission to fail, I do not give you permission to give up” (Frank Pellegrino III,2017) This quote is my first lesson in my class. We have a discussion what the quote means and it is a motivator to realize failures are temporary, and an opportunity to learn something new. It shows students even the teacher make mistakes, and I grow from them, you as students can too. We discuss how everyone is human, even adults are learning new things everyday. This quote really encourages me as a teacher, and it has changed the community in my classroom to be more inclusive and encouraging. I constantly throughout the year get my students to reflect on this quote. Anytime myself or students are feeling negative or are faced with challenges we talk about the quote and remind ourselves, we are going to be okay. Daily Reflection - Take away 1: Giving a quote from my own grandparent is putting life into perspective and giving a real world example. I have never though about the quote as a life example. Take away 2: Taking ownership of your actions towards a situation helps you control your own narrative and is a great way to help self-regulate your emotions. Take away 3: Having projects that are meaningful, for example, school garden, or things that help the community, help impact students happiness and feeling of belongingness. Implement - In the past I have done goal setting multiple times throughout the year. I loved how the book gave a visual on what is my ‘today goal’ my big goal, what are the steps to complete those goals, and what is my current next step to achieve the goal. In my class we discuss goals and write them down, we discuss how we met the previous goal in the year. I have never taught how to have daily goals or talk about the steps to achieve those goals. Reflecting, I am rolling my eyes, I can not believe I did not model goal setting correctly! Modeling what it means to have steps toward a goal is a game changer. I will be using this visual on page 84 in my own classroom next year. Teaching that you have to work toward a goal and what that may potentintoally look like will allow students to make their own game plan, and help more students achieve their goals before the end of the year.
