Hi folks, Thanks for taking the time to learn about my journey! Earlier this year, I published my first crossword in the New York Times, an amazing experience. The puzzle detailed the carnage that ensued when a scientist demonstrated her new shrink ray at a party. One of the non-theme entries in that puzzle was AMON-RA, clued as [King of the Egyptian gods]. I wasn't wild about this entry, but it was best available to me given other constraints. After the puzzle was released, I saw some complaints online about this entry because it has no standard spelling. According to XWordInfo.com, the deity has appeared in the NYT as AMEN-RA (35 times), AMON-RA (7 times), AMUN-RA (2 times), and AMON-RE (1 time). In its form prior to being fused with the sun god Ra (or Re), the deity has shown up as AMON (148 times), AMUN (3 times), and even AMEN (11 times). In my view, this ambiguity detracts from the solving experience. That is why I am making a pledge to refrain from including AMON-RA or any of its variants in all future puzzles I create. I am excited to participate in this initiative and invite other constructors to join this worthy cause! I've created this space to detail my progress and keep myself accountable. Going forward, I will be posting here whenever a new puzzle is out to confirm that the King of the Egyptian gods did not sneak in somehow. Wish me luck—I'll need it. -Aaron |
