Day 5 | 15th August 2020 pg. 75
During the Cold War period, the variance between developed and developing countries became a weak point in the current systems in international organisations. As the challenges shifted from different types of governance (left vs right) the issue focused on the different types of economies (industrialised vs primary) and ones with colonial histories (Asia and Africa) to those imperial nations. What I found interesting was the during the ’50s when developmentalism was the focus for countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa they recognised the unfair advantages in the subsequent IO’s gatherings of the types of goods being traded from developing to developed countries. How that affected the strength. Thus, the G77 coalition expanded its duties into another group called the G24 which focused on the developing countries and their interest in developing their nations' economies using the Bretton Woods agreement (I think). Between the developing countries, they came to many disagreements and a lot of the proposals were very vague. This lead to another group called the New International Economic Order or (NIEO). With the creation of so many groups at this time, it's hard to see how agreements were made and navigated. So many people were on different agendas given their history, resources and power at the time. The ’50s-’70s was a cultural diversification of economies which made this difficult for an agreement to be made. Also, the book mentions a rule or mandate passed which allowed the different types of governance to be respected (left vs right). It mentions that given the cultural backgrounds of the diversity of cultures there shouldn’t be an expectation to be capitalist, socialist ect. This section had a lot of information and was dense at some points. What has been most useful in the historical parts has been gauging what the international agenda was at the time and seeing how that influenced the IO’s and their direction. |
