I've been feeling overwhelmed these past few weeks due to an issue related to family illness; I'm really struggling to stay in the work more actively and not sure how to balance it all. Will keep trying!

As I mentioned in my last post, my energy is flagging a bit. However, I feel like I am getting back on track today! I started reading Me and White Supremacy this past week and will continue through the exercises this week.

This week I had a conversation with friends about where and how to get involved in actions or groups with anti-racism missions. I watched an interview on the Today show with two mothers of black men killed by the police and I listened to Kimberly Crenshaw discussing Say Her Name. I am going to say that I did meet my commitment to engaged in research and reflection, but I did not do the thing I thought I was going to do, i.e., I did not start reading White Fragility or So You Want to Talk About Race. As I mentioned in my other journal post, my energy seems to be flagging and I'm not doing as much or reflecting as much. I am going to commit to doing something very incremental this week. I will start reading one of my books about race.

This past week, I had a meaningful conversation with a friend about racism, social justice, and the intrapersonal work we are trying to do to challenge ourselves to do better. We both listened to the same radio program (referenced below) and discussed it. I have almost finished reading The Underground Railroad and will start White Fragility and So You Want to Talk About Race this week. I listened to a conversation with Casey Gerald on Forum (NPR) about race, U.S. culture, the 4th of July, etc., which included excerpts from Frederick Douglass' "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July" and plan to listen to a performance of Mr. Douglass' descendants reading this speech.
